Gold Mining Experience At Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, March 8th, 2025, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™ Event @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am.
The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process, with the mine shaft, tramway, ore carts, crushing and extraction, that are always on display, but operated on 2nd Saturdays. The highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain.
The program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday, followed by a visit to the arrastre, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized!
Then onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold!
Remember, your admission ($15 for guests 13 yrs and up, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past, the Historic First Church, and our TB Cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the onlyknown existing tubercular cabin from that era.
Get ready to travel back in Time! Note: this program is approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen!
**Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™, tickets must be pre-purchased.  No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event.

Presenter Kraig Nelson began as a docent at the Cave Creek Museum in 2008, became a regular columnist for the Museum’s newsletter in 2011 and the Museum Board elected him the Museum’s official historian in 2016.  Kraig also co-authored the Museum’s 2013 book, “Images of America-Cave Creek and Carefree”. Kraig is a regular columnist for “A Peak at the Peak” and North Valley Magazine.  He has been published in many other periodicals, including True West.     Admission is $10, including an all-day Museum pass.  (No discounts or Culture Passes will be honored.)  FREE for members; advance reservations are required.     Tickets are non-refundable, but may be used for Museum Admission or Event within 90 days of purchase by calling Staff

In whose footsteps did Alice Birdsall, Rose Mofford, Barbara Rodriguez Mundell, Barbara McConnell Barrett, Sandra Day O'Connor, Janet Napolitano, et al., tread?  Lorna Lockwood, Arizona's first Woman Supreme Court Justice.  Presented by Cave historian Kraig Nelson, you KNOW this will be a fun and engaging hour to kick off Women's History Month.  And you'll even learn what Lorna Lockwood's connection to Cave Creek is!  Reserve your ticket here: https://shorturl.at/3LcZJ

The reality is plain: there never would have been a settled West without the women! FORMAT: In-Person – classroom

About the Presenter: Bob Boze Bell has been a radio personality, a cartoonist, an author, a painter, and historian. His work has appeared in “Arizona Highways”, “Playboy”, “National Lampoon”, the “Arizona Republic” and “True West” magazine. For ten years (2002-20012) he did a video version of True West Moments which ran on the Westerns Channel. He can currently be seen on the series “Gunslingers” which runs on the American Heroes Channel. Bob is also executive editor of “True West” magazine, a position he has held since 1999. He has written a dozen books on Old West characters like Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok and a three-part series (so far) on Classic Gunfights which appear in “True West”. Gold Mining Experience Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, March 29th, 2025, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
