Cave Creek Museum Presents: The P.O.W.s of Papago Butte March 2 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm   Although his “day job” is chief archivist at the celebrated Huhugam Ki Museum at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, author Steve Hoza has long been fascinated by the history of the German prisoner-of-war camp that sprawled at the base of the Papago Buttes. From 1944 through the end of the war, the encampment housed 31,000 P.O.W.s and was even the site of a “Great Escape”, when 24 of the prisoners tunneled out of the fenced camp — and most were promptly recaptured. Through dozens of photos and in the words of the P.O.W.s, the American soldiers who guarded them, and the Phoenix citizens who lived nearby, spend time within the razor-wired confines of what was one of Arizona’s largest prison camps.     Admission is $10, including an all-day Museum pass.  (No discounts or Culture Passes will be honored.)  FREE for members; advance reservations are required.

Scottsdale Blue Zone Project
Tuesday, March 26th, 2024, 3:30pm to 5pm at Holland Center
Learn about Scottsdale’s journey to improve the lives of Scottsdale through engaging individuals, worksites, schools, grocery stores, restaurants, and faith-based organizations to help residents live better, longer.  Sarah Kearney,  Executive Director from Blue Zones Project Scottsdale will present the plan and answer questions from community. The Blue Zones Scottsdale Project is a comprehensive initiative that transforms the environments where people live, work, learn, and play to measurably improve community well-being, resilience, and economic vitality.
Blue Zones Project is a first-of-its-kind population health initiative based on research and principles developed by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author who identified the cultures of the world—or blue zones—with the healthiest, longest-living populations.
Research shows that where people live has a bigger influence on their health than their genetics, so Blue Zones Project focuses on the Life Radius®—the area close to home where people spend 90% of their lives. Blue Zones Project works with communities to optimize public policies, social connections, and the places and spaces where people spend the most time (streets, parks, schools, workplaces, grocery stores, faith communities, homes) to help make healthy choices easy and more accessible to all. Participating communities have seen double-digit drops in obesity and smoking rates, economic investment in downtown corridors, grant funding awards to support policies and programs to improve health equity, and measurable savings in healthcare costs.
