Arizona has an extraordinary array of national park units—34 in all—blanket Arizona from border to border. They range from the volcanic sprawl of stone hoodoos crowning Chiricahua National Monument to the badlands of Petrified Forest National Park colored like blood and peaches to the miles of seductive shoreline at Lake Mead National Recreation Area to the never-ending diversity of the Arizona National Scenic Trail traversing the length of the state.
Roger Naylor is an award-winning Arizona travel writer and author. He has been swoony in love with Arizona since arriving as a wide-eyed college student. For decades he has explored his adopted state while writing about his discoveries. He specializes in national and state parks, lonely hiking trails, twisting back roads, diners with burgers sizzling on the grill, small towns, ghost towns, and pie. Naylor’s work has appeared in the Arizona Republic, USA Today, The Guardian, Country Magazine, Arizona Highways, and dozens more. He was inducted into the Arizona Tourism Hall of Fame in 2018. He is also the narrator of the Verde Canyon Railroad.
So fortunate to host this Lover-of-All-Things-Arizona as the holiday shopping season begins. A signed book(s) from Roger is a gift that suits every taste and always fits!

Gold Mining Experience At Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, December 14th, 2024, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™ Event @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am.
The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process, with the mine shaft, tramway, ore carts, crushing and extraction, that are always on display, but operated on 2nd Saturdays. The highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain.
The program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday, followed by a visit to the arrastre, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized!
Then onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold!
Remember, your admission ($15 for guests 13 yrs and up, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past, the Historic First Church, and our TB Cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the onlyknown existing tubercular cabin from that era.
Get ready to travel back in Time! Note: this program is approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen!
**Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™, tickets must be pre-purchased. No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event.

Gold Mining Experience Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, December 28th, 2024, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum

The 2024-25 hiking season has finally arrived! To help folks plan for upcoming hikes with their neighbors at Winfield, each month we plan to provide a forward calendar of hikes for the next five weeks. Below is a list of the hikes and trailheads for the upcoming five weeks:
10/29 - Marcus Landslide Trail from the Tom's Thumb TH on 128th Street
11/5 - Cathedral Rocks from the Brown's Ranch TH on Alma School Parkway
11/12 - Dragonfly & Metate Loop from Spur Cross Ranch TH on Spur Cross Road
11/19 Granite Mountain East Side Mini Loop from Granite Mountain TH on 136th Street
11/26 Seitts Preserve-Cave Creek Regional Park Loop from the E. Cloud & E. 52nd St. Trailhead
For each hike, please meet at the Winfield Clubhouse at 8:15am for an 8:30am departure.
During the week prior to each hike, Marshall Sussman will distribute a detailed description of the next hike. For each of the outings, the hike descriptions will outline options for longer outings for ambitious hikers. If we have to cancel a hike due to bad weather, the missed hike will be rescheduled and included among the hikes for the following month.
In late November, we will circulate a new forward calendar of hikes for December.
For questions about upcoming hikes or related matters, please feel free to contact me, Marshall Sussman or Brad Adams.
We look forward to seeing you on some of the upcoming hikes.
Happy trails,
Phil
