Hiking - Winfield Group
Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, 8:30am at Various
In order to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and better light of early mornings, this hiking season we plan to start a little earlier than past years, with hikers asked to meet each Tuesday at the Winfield Clubhouse at 7:45am for an 8am departure.
To simplify communications, I will no longer be sending out a detailed hike description with options for longer or shorter hikes for each outing. Instead, you will be provided just a short description of the planned hike and driving directions to the trailhead. Except for special outings, we will try to keep all hikes to a maximum of 6 miles. Hikers are welcome to plan longer or shorter versions of group hike, but they will need to coordinate carpooling and other matters among themselves.
List of November Hikes:
11/4 - Dragonfly, Boca Grande & Spur Cross Trail Loop (Spur Cross Conservation Area) - The hike is about 4.0 miles in length and entails modest elevation changes. We start and end at the parking lot across from Spur Cross Stables, which is in the Jewel of the Creek Preserve and next to the entrance to Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Our hike begins on the Dragonfly Trail and then follows the Boca Grande Trail (a recent new name) to the Spur Cross Trail, which we follow back to Spur Cross Road and our trailhead parking lot. The trailhead is about a 15-20 minute drive from Winfield. Drive north for 2 miles on Tom Darlington, turn left on Cave Creek Road for a mile and then right onto Spur Cross Road, which you follow north to the trailhead.
11/11 - Loop Around Granite Mountain (McDowell Sonoran Preserve) - The hike covers about 5.8 miles and involves only small elevation changes as we circumnavigate Granite Mountain. Beginning and ending at the Granite Mountain Trailhead on 136th Street, our hike follows the Bootlegger, Saddlehorn, Granite Mountain Loop and (again) Bootlegger trails. The trailhead is about a 30 minute drive from Winfield. Drive south on Pima, turn left on Dynamite, which changes name to Rio Verde Road after passing Alma School Road. Turn left on 136th Street and drive 3 miles until reaching the trailhead parking lot on your left.
11/18 - Marcus Landslide Trail(McDowell Sonoran Preserve) - Our hike may be described as a 4.0 mile lollipop with modest elevation gains on the return. We head out and back 1.5 miles on the Marcus Landslide Trail to a scenic one mile loop at the farthest point from our Tom's Thumb Trailhead. The drive from Winfield is about 25-30 minutes. Head south on Pima, turn left on Dynamite, right on North 118th Street, then left on Ranch Road and finally right again onto 128th Street, which you follow to its end at the Tom's Thumb Trailhead.
11/25 - Apache Wash Loop (Phoenix Sonoran Preserve) - Our hike is a 4.9 mile loop with moderate elevation increases required to reach our high point at Ridgeback Overlook. From the Apache Wash Trailhead on East Sonoran Desert Drive, We begin on Sidewinder Trail for about 2.5 miles before returning to our trailhead via Ridgeback and. Ocotillo Trails, with a 0.25 mile diversion to Ridgeback Overlook on the way back. The drive from Winfield is about 25 minutes. Head south on N. Scottsdale Road, turn right on Lone Mountain, then left on Cave Creek Road and finally right on E. Sonoran Desert Drive, which you follow until reaching the trailhead on your right.

Gold Mining Experience At Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, November 8th, 2025, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™ Event @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am. The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process, with the mine shaft, tramway, ore carts, crushing and extraction, that are always on display, but operated on 2nd Saturdays. The highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain. The program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday, followed by a visit to the arrastre, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized! Then onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold! Remember, your admission ($15 for guests 13 yrs and up, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past, the Historic First Church, and our TB Cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the onlyknown existing tubercular cabin from that era. Get ready to travel back in Time! Note: this program is approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen! **Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™, tickets must be pre-purchased. No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event. Buy Ticket: https://cavecreekmuseum.org/events/list/

Hiking - Winfield Group
Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, 8:30am at Various

Veterans Day Celebration
Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, 3pm at Carefree Easy Street
This year, the program will feature Commander Martin Sepulveda, U.S. Navy Reserve, (Retired), who served in Desert Storm, the Kosovo Air Campaign, four combat tours in Iraq and a combat tour in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. With more than three decades of service, from 1977 to 2015, Commander Sepulveda will share his profound insights on courage, resilience, and patriotism, offering the audience a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military heroes. Adding a touch of legacy and reflection, local youth will also play an important role in this year’s celebration. The Imprints of Honor program, formerly known as the Veterans Heritage Project, encourages students to connect with veterans and document their stories. The program’s student – teacher liaison and U.S. Army National Guard veteran, Jacob Wampfler, will share the impact that these interviews have with both students and veterans.
The celebration will be woven with the sounds of patriotic and military-themed music. Local high school junior Olivia Nicosia will deliver a stirring rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful”.
The Main Event Swing Band will add a lively touch with classic tunes and play the military hymns. As the ceremony draws to a close, a moving rendition of The Last Post and TAPS will echo through the pavilion, played on responding bugles.
The Town of Carefree happily invites all to join us for this meaningful afternoon of remembrance and celebration. Together, as a community, we will honor the legacy of our veterans, celebrate their sacrifices, and reflect on the freedoms they have secured for us all.

Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am.

Hiking - Winfield Group
Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, 8:30am at Various
