Veterans Day Celebration
Monday, November 11th, 2024, 3pm to 5pm at Carefree town center
This year, our program will feature U.S. Army Master Sergeant David Allwine, a Vietnam War veteran and former POW held from 1970 to 1973. With two decades of service, from 1966 to 1986, Master Sergeant Allwine will share his profound insights on courage, resilience, and patriotism, offering our audience a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military heroes. Adding a touch of legacy and reflection, local youth will also play an important role in this year’s celebration. The Imprints of Honor program, formerly known as the Veterans Heritage Project, encourages students to connect with veterans and document their stories. One of the program's alumni, U.S. Marine Corps Captain Sophie Ripa, returns to Carefree to share how these interviews with veterans have shaped her own life and career. Having conducted nine such interviews herself, Captain Ripa brings a unique perspective on the impact veterans continue to have on younger generations.
Honor Flight Arizona, an organization that honors WWII, Cold War, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans by providing an all-expenses-paid journey to Washington, D.C., will also be present. Board Member Diane Franzese will recount stories from veterans who’ve taken this journey of honor and remembrance, inspiring us all. She will also provide information on how veterans can apply to experience this tribute firsthand. The celebration will be woven with the sounds of patriotic and military-themed music. Sophomore Annalyn Abraham from Cactus Shadows High School will deliver stirring renditions of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” The Carolyn Eynon Singers will perform a selection of patriotic favorites, including military hymns, while The Main Event Swing Band adds a lively touch with classic tunes. As the ceremony draws to a close, a moving rendition of The Last Post and TAPS will echo through the pavilion, played on responding bugles.
Join us in this meaningful afternoon of remembrance and celebration. Together, as a community, we will honor the legacy of our veterans, celebrate their sacrifices, and reflect on the freedoms they have secured for us all.
We warmly invite the community to gather for our 15th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Monday, November 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, Carefree. This cherished tradition unites us in a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and dedication of veterans, past and present, who have selflessly served to protect our nation’s freedoms.

Denise Lundin, a member of our Board of Directors, made international news when she found original court transcripts from the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Now Denise will be on-hand to tell us all about her discovery of the famous documents and how you can take advantage of the Arizona Memory Project –free of charge– for learning and contributing to Arizona history.
When Denise was Clerk of the Superior Court for Cochise County in 2010, she — along with two other clerks — found a box of original court transcripts from the 1881 Coroner’s Inquest in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral as they were cleaning out storage space at the Bisbee, Ariz., courthouse. The documents were restored and are now housed at the Arizona State Library, Phoenix Archives & Public Records, and online at the Arizona Memory Project web site archives — a treasure trove of articles, photos, and stories available to the public for free.
Denise was among the first to begin digitizing historical documents and adding them to Arizona Memory Project (AMP) collections, has a B.A. in History from the University of Arizona, and is a past member of the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board. It’s an honor to have her at The Holland Center to share her experience and expertise.
In this event, you’ll learn:
Fascinating facts about the gunfight at the O.K. Corral learned through the coroner’s transcript.
How Denise discovered the original 1881 documents.
The beginnings of the Arizona Memory Project.

Gold Mining Experience Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™ Event @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am.
The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process, with the mine shaft, tramway, ore carts, crushing and extraction, that are always on display, but operated on 2nd Saturdays. The highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain.
The program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday, followed by a visit to the arrastre, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized!
Then onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold!
Remember, your admission ($15 for guests 13 yrs and up, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past, the Historic First Church, and our TB Cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the onlyknown existing tubercular cabin from that era.
Get ready to travel back in Time! Note: this program is approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen!
**Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™, tickets must be pre-purchased. No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event.
