Gold Mining Experience At Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, January 11th, 2025, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™ Event @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am Museum opens at 9:00 am for event check-in; the ARIZONA GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ begins at 10:00 am.
The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process, with the mine shaft, tramway, ore carts, crushing and extraction, that are always on display, but operated on 2nd Saturdays. The highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain.
The program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday, followed by a visit to the arrastre, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized!
Then onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold!
Remember, your admission ($15 for guests 13 yrs and up, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past, the Historic First Church, and our TB Cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the onlyknown existing tubercular cabin from that era.
Get ready to travel back in Time! Note: this program is approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen!
**Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™, tickets must be pre-purchased. No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event.

Keep Cave Creek Clean (Up)
Saturday, January 25th, 2025, 8am to 9am at 44th Street & Carefree Highway
Community volunteers, lead my Thomas Secor and Bobby Herbeck, are holding a Keep Cave Creek Clean event on Saturday, January 25 at 8 a.m. to pick up trash along Carefree Hwy. The group is starting at 44th Street and Carefree Hwy. Tools provided.
For more details go to https://bit.ly/3PGhbGe for the Keep Cave Creek Clean group page.
Cave Creek is now a member of Keep American Beautiful (KAB), a national nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of inspiring and educating volunteers to take action to keep communities clean.
Our first (of many) street cleanups will coincide with the Foothills Food Bank annual Shred-a-Thon which promotes safe disposal of sensitive documents, proper recycling of electronics, re-use of clothing to those in need and large waste removal. This one hour cleanup will happen before Shred-a-Thon event begins and thanks to North Valley Junk Removal, we'll be able to have everything disposed of in a proper manner as we beautify our community and make our desert more healthy that it was before

Gold Mining Experience Cave Creek Museum
Saturday, January 25th, 2025, 10am to 11:30am at Cave Creek Museum

Green Fire: Desert Foothills Land Trust

DFLT Special Screening
Green Fire | Documentary Film about Aldo Leopold Thursday, Jan. 30
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. | Program begins at 6:15 p.m.
Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, 101 Easy St.
Tickets: $25/person | Available at dflt.org Desert Foothills Land Trust (DFLT) invites the community to a special screening of "Green Fire," the award-winning documentary celebrating the life and legacy of Aldo Leopold, legendary conservationist. The event will take place on Thursday, January 30th, at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion in Carefree. Doors will open at 5:30 PM, with the event beginning at 6:15.
Considered by many to be the father of modern conservation and wildlife ecology, Aldo Leopold was a forester, philosopher, conservationist, educator, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. The documentary "Green Fire" captures Leopold's transformative journey, tracing his evolution from his formative years working in the National Forests of Arizona to his groundbreaking later conservation career. Through stunning cinematography and thoughtful narrative, the film showcases how Leopold's revolutionary ideas continue to shape modern conservation efforts from urban centers to remote wilderness areas.
The evening will include a conversation between two passionate voices in conservation. Buddy Huffaker brings Leopold's vision to life as Executive Director of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, where he champions Leopold’s enduring philosophy of the land ethic. He'll be joined by our own Vicki Preston, DFLT President and CEO, for a dynamic discussion that connects Leopold's timeless wisdom to the vital work of protecting our beloved Sonoran Desert landscape. Together, they'll explore how global conservation principles play out in our own backyard.
"Leopold's vision of the natural world as a community to which we all belong remains powerfully relevant today," says Vicki Preston, DFLT President and CEO. "We're honored to host this screening and facilitate important conversations about conservation in our community."
Make an evening of it! Savor delicious local fare from the popular Speedy Burger before the film. This special event also offers an opportunity to purchase the 75th anniversary edition of "A Sand County Almanac" – Leopold's masterwork that continues to inspire generations of conservationists and nature lovers alike.
Join us for an unforgettable evening under the stars where film, conversation, and community come together to celebrate the enduring legacy of Aldo Leopold. Whether you're a long-time conservationist or simply curious about our natural world, this event promises to inspire and enlighten. Space is limited, so secure your tickets today and be part of this exceptional gathering that connects our local conservation efforts to a greater global vision.
